Can You Remove Scratches from Glass? Here’s How

Glass scratches can be a common occurrence due to multiple factors, including harsh cleaning cloths, moving furniture, debris from renovating or everyday wear and tear.

You might spot them on windows, internal glass partitions, shower screens and larger-scale commercial glazing. They may be minor, but left untreated, they can become worse over time.

In many cases, you can remove scratches from glass, especially if you act early and use the right approach. Here’s how to assess the damage and what to try before deciding whether to call a professional.

Removing Scratches From Glass

The answer depends on the depth and severity of the scratch. Surface-level marks that your fingernail doesn’t catch on can usually be polished out with basic tools. But deeper indentations that are felt by touch may require specialists or even full glass replacement.

If in doubt, start with gentle polishing and monitor the results. It’s important to avoid aggressive scrubbing or DIY kits not suited to the scale of damage.

DIY Glass Scratch Removal Methods

If you’re dealing with light scuffs or cloudy marks, these DIY options might be worth trying at home.

Toothpaste (Non-Gel)

Plain white toothpaste can act as a gentle abrasive for polishing out light surface scratches on glass. While it won’t work miracles on deeper cracks, it’s a handy DIY fix for scuffs caused by grit or contact with hard objects.

  1. Clean and dry the glass thoroughly. Any dust or debris can cause further scratches while buffing.
  2. Apply a small dab of toothpaste to a soft microfibre cloth or cotton pad.
  3. Gently rub the area in small circular motions for about 30 to 60 seconds. The mild abrasives in the toothpaste help wear down the edges of the scratch, making it less noticeable.
  4. Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove residue and assess the result.
  5. Repeat the process if needed, but don’t overdo it as it can dull the glass.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a gentle, natural abrasive often used for household cleaning and it can also help reduce the appearance of smaller scratches. Like toothpaste, it works by very lightly polishing the surface, smoothing out the edges of small imperfections.

  1. Mix baking soda with a few drops of water to create a thick, spreadable paste. Aim for a texture similar to toothpaste.
  2. Apply the paste using a soft, clean microfibre cloth, focusing only on the scratched area.
  3. Buff the surface in small, circular motions for 30 to 60 seconds. Use light pressure, polishing the glass.
  4. Rinse the area with clean water and gently dry with a lint-free cloth to check your progress.
  5. Repeat as needed, but keep in mind that this method is only suitable for surface-level marks.

Cerium Oxide Glass Polishing Kits

If the scratch is too deep for baking soda or toothpaste to handle, a cerium oxide glass polishing kit might be the next step. These kits are designed to tackle more stubborn surface-level damage and can be found in some specialist hardware stores or online.

Cerium oxide is a fine polishing compound that, when mixed with water, forms a slurry capable of smoothing out deeper scratches on plain (non-coated) glass. Most kits require the use of a buffer tool or drill attachment to apply the compound evenly and effectively.

While the process can be time-consuming and requires a steady hand, the results can be impressive, especially if you’re looking to restore clarity to a visibly damaged area. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully, and test in an less obvious spot first.

Clear Nail Polish

For very fine surface scratches, clear nail polish can offer a quick and surprisingly effective temporary fix. By filling in the scratch with a clear coating, light is refracted more evenly, making the damage far less noticeable.

To try this method, carefully apply a thin layer of clear nail polish directly over the scratch and allow it to dry completely. Once it’s set, lightly wipe the area with a small amount of nail polish remover on a soft cloth to smooth out any excess and create a more even finish.

It won’t repair the glass permanently, but it can be a helpful short-term solution for shallow marks on windows or doors where they’re more noticeable. As with any DIY method, it’s best to test on a discreet area first to avoid any unexpected results.

When To Book An Expert

Some scratches go beyond the limits of DIY and need specialist tools to be properly restored. You should consider professional help if:

  • The scratch is deep enough to catch with a fingernail.
  • Multiple scratches affect a large area.
  • The glass is valuable or part of a listed property.
  • You’re unsure how to polish without causing distortion.

At All Clean London, we use commercial-grade rotary polishers, multi-stage compounds and resin infills to restore scratched glass without the need for full replacement. This includes internal glass, shopfronts, curtain walling, glass balustrades and more.

We’re often called in to rescue glass during or after building works, when scratches occur from site debris or poor handling. Restoration is usually faster and more cost-effective than installing new glass panels.

It Might Not Be Scratched Glass After All

Sometimes what appears to be a scratch on your glass might actually be something far easier to fix like hard water stains or limescale buildup. This is especially common on external glazing, shower screens, or any surface regularly exposed to water.

The good news? These marks can often be removed without needing to polish or repair the glass itself. Eco-friendly limescale removers can break down the mineral deposits, while steam cleaning offers a chemical-free option that’s gentle yet effective.

For more stubborn stains, specialist chemical treatments can restore clarity without damaging the surface. If you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with limescale or a genuine scratch, try running your fingernail gently across the area. If it feels smooth and doesn’t catch, chances are it’s just buildup that can be cleaned away.

Preventing Future Scratches

Once your glass is back to its best, here are some ways to protect it:

  • Use soft cloths for cleaning
Always opt for soft, lint-free materials when wiping down glass. Microfibre cloths trap dirt without dragging it across the surface, significantly reducing the risk of fine scratches caused by dust or debris.

  • Avoid abrasive sponges or brushes
Even small particles in harsh scrubbers can leave lasting marks on your glass. Steer clear of anything with a rough texture, like steel wool or scouring pads, unless it’s specifically designed for use on glass surfaces.

  • Clean windows regularly to prevent dirt buildup
Over time, airborne grime and environmental pollutants can bond with the glass, making them harder to remove without aggressive scrubbing. Routine cleaning helps prevent this buildup and keeps your glass easier to maintain.

  • Install protective films for high-traffic commercial areas
In offices, storefronts, or other busy environments, protective window films add a nearly invisible barrier against scuffs and can even reduce UV damage.

  • Apply anti-scratch coatings where appropriate
Specialised coatings can be applied during professional cleaning to give your glass a longer-lasting defense against wear and tear, especially helpful in environments prone to frequent contact or harsh conditions.

Professional maintenance also helps. At All Clean London, we offer regular cleaning services that keep glass clear and safe, using gentle but effective techniques.
